As an Earth Scientist at the University of Twente, I am interested in the materials that we use every day. I want to know where they are coming from. If something wasn’t grown (like wood) then it was mined somewhere on our planet. I specialise in finding the special raw materials that we need for wind turbines, solar panels and electric cars, in other words, the stuff we need for the Green Energy Transition. In my TEDx talk I will try to make you see your smartphone through my eyes: not just as a cool gadget, but also as a treasure trove of hard-won rare materials. Which too often end up in landfill when we get a new phone, even though we desperately need them for the Energy Transition.
